The best of the rest
When I originally started this whole movie thing it was
supposed to be five days in a row, Monday through Friday all about movies. Unfortunately, it did not work out as
planned, so I have been talking about movies on a music site for what seems
like forever. Today is the last day, and it is basically, the best of the rest,
all the movies that I thought about going onto one list or another. I am not
going to give the movies big write ups or anything like usual; just a quick
mention and why I liked it and why it didn’t make the list, and of course a
small clip to keep you entertained. So put away the popcorn, this won’t take
long, then tomorrow we rock. By the way, there is no particular order here.
Change of Habit
Surprisingly, none of Elvis’ movies made the list of
musicals. This one was the only one that I considered because it was not
completely hokey. It was also Elvis’
last movie. It’s not a bad film, I left it off the list though, because I
couldn’t discern whether or not I knew the songs because of the movie or just
because my love of Elvis
Control
This didn’t quite make the biopic list. The movie is about
Ian Curtis, the lead singer of Joy Division. If you haven’t heard anything by
them you should, while you are at it
check out the band New Order(Besides Blue Monday) So it didn’t make the list
because I feel that although the movie is good, I don’t love it and unlike most
of the movies on the list, it didn’t make me more interested in Joy
Division.
Purple Rain
Ok, some people love this movie and live and die by it. The
first time I saw it, I rented it, and my mom had to watch it first so she
could fast forward over everything that her little 7 year old boy shouldn't
see. So if you think about Purple Rain
for a second, or Prince for that matter, I didn't get to see much. Sadly that
is why the movie didn’t make any of the lists. So if you are upset by it not
being included go yell at my mother.
Alright I knew this was going to be a problem when I started
writing this, for those of you that don’t know, Prince is out of control. I don’t
mean “change my name into a symbol then to Christopher then back to Prince” out
of control, I mean, the fucking guy doesn’t believe in the internet. He has now
embraced itunes but go ahead try to look him up on youtube. Instead I will link
you to a few articles about the subject.
Rocky III
I have the soundtrack on record for christ’s sake. I thought
about putting this one on the soundtracks list, but in the end, I really only
loved Eye of the Tiger and Gonna Fly Now the latter of which was used in almost every
Rocky movie. So I left it off the list, but The movie is still my favorite
Rocky movie.
Popeye
Say what?
Damn straight there is actually a Popeye movie and it is a
musical starring Robin Williams as Popeye himself. The soundtrack is actually ok and was written
by Harry Nilsson, but in the end I can positively say I only have a few of the
songs partially memorized so I just couldn’t add it to the musical list
Duets
This is another obscure movie that I love, obscure because
not too many people have heard of it, but most people remember the Huey
Lewis/Gwyneth Paltrow cover of Cruisin. I also loved the fact that all but one of the
actors actually sang in the movie and had their songs on the original
soundtrack. However in the end, I was
stuck on the fact that I love Huey Lewis and other than his stuff, everything
else is just decent covers. So I cut it from the list.
Hairspray
Let me start out by saying right away that I would have only
been talking about the original John Waters film, and while I am glad that
people liked it enough to take it on Broadway, and I love Christopher Walken,
Fuck the new version. Sorry I guess I am nostalgic, and honestly that is why I
held this one from the list; even though the original movie had a killer
soundtrack of great 50’s music. I just
didn’t want people to pine for the new version, cause I felt like that new one
stole a piece of my childhood, had it’s way with it and didn’t bother to call
it the next day.
West Side Story
Since we are on the subject of perverting my thoughts of
what is good in this world; there was once a time in my life when I though West
Side Story was the cat’s pajamas. But
then I found the original and I liked it a lot better, the original of course
being Romeo and Juliet. And realistically my favorite song in the movie is
America, don’t ask me why I just like it better than the rest. None of the
other songs really stuck out. It is a cool movie and all; I just didn’t feel it
was an incredibly memorable musical.
Romeo and Juliet
Since we are on the subject, I of course am talking about the
1996 Baz Luhrmann adaptation. The soundtrack is actually incredible; I mean it
has Young Hearts Run Free on it, and Kissing You is actually a beautiful song.
I hope by now everyone has heard Lovefool by The Cardigans. Plus Garbage and
Everclear and Butthole Surfers all make appearances on the soundtrack. So why did I leave it off? Pure commercialism, I am still pissed off that
my favorite song from the movie was not in the original soundtrack, When Doves Cry- I thought that song was
killer in the movie. And I knew the song, so I loved it. So then I had to buy 2
tapes, and back then kids, you couldn’t just download 1 song(Fucking Napster
didn’t even exist yet!) So I have always argued to anyone that will listen that
Capitol Records were assholes that owed me money. So that disgruntlement left
it off the list.
I wish I could show you a scene with When Doves Cry, but a
good one is not available. (See Purple Rain Above)
Dirty Dancing
This one is barely worth my time, yes the music in it is
good, and I love the movie as well, but I have always had one grudge against
it, and it’s a big one. Some people might think I am crazy for hating this so
much but the reason I didn’t include it is She’s like the Wind, I fucking hate
that song. Hate it, and it doesn’t fit in the movie. It’s a period movie and
then you have an obvious 80’s song in there. Hungry Eyes also always threw me
off, but I still feel like She’s like the wind was a shitty attempt to make
Swayze a music star, it did but only for one song. I just always felt like
those parts where they had 80’s music were dumb. (Time of My Life is gets a pass because a Righteous Brother sings it) It’s a
movie about the 60’s use good 60’s music please. And as much as I hate it, here
it is….
Notorious
This one was pretty recent and it is a good flick, but when
watching it, I realized that I would rather watch a huge in depth documentary
about the East Coast/ West Coast rivalry. I think the movie was made ok, and
the guy who plays Biggie is fantastic but in the end, I guess just for me
personally I wasn’t taken back by his life, and I knew what was coming the
whole time and I already knew the songs so, I just didn’t add it to my biopics
list.
Oliver!
I always loved this musical and sort of sometimes wished
that I was an orphan. The music in it is fun and, I mean musical music nothing
crazy jumps out at you. So in the end I realized that I’d Do Anything and
Consider Yourself were the only songs that I really loved from the movie and
barely remembered any of the rest. And frankly what I really remember is “may I
have some more” So I decided that other than that, the movie is kind of dark
and scary so I don’t want to think fondly of it so it didn’t make the cut.
Dead Man on Campus
This one was recently pointed out to me as missing from the
soundtracks list, and guess what, total correct assessment, I honestly forgot
about this movie. This movie is where I discovered Supergrass and really
enjoyed Marilyn Manson. There are other
good ones by Goldfinger, Soul Coughing, Blur, and Creed (shortly before they
started sucking….sorry, it’s my opinion) So, as much as I want to I can’t drag
this on. I guess it’s safe to say that I don’t know where I would have placed
it on the soundtracks list especially since I forgot about it, but it’s not
bad.
Ok, that does it for all the movies. I have told you about
now in total 53 movies. So I hope you take some time soon to watch maybe 1 or 2
of them, especially something you didn’t know about or ever bother to see. I
had a lot of fun with this, but I don’t want to have to think about movies for
a while. Thanks
